Help bring a world of good food home to America
Part of what made your service in your host country special
was the food you encountered. Share recipes for some of those special dishes with the rest of us
so we can get a glimpse of your experience and share a bit of the culture of a different part of
the world. We plan to compile a cookbook that will enable thousands of Americans to experience
some of what you encountered; along with your stories telling about the role this food played
in your experience of the host country. This cookbook, tentatively entitled
PeaceMeal:
International Recipes Collected by Peace Corps Volunteers,
will then be published with
the proceeds benefiting CMPCE's efforts to establish a Museum of the Peace Corps Experience.

"When the durian fruit season arrives the mood of the country perks up
noticeably. High prices will be paid for a favorite variety and those
who own trees must guard them from thieves. This fruit which is almost
universally loved by the locals is almost as universally despised by
outsiders. It is usually described as stinking like rotten onions.
Those who are willing to eat it for several years become unable to
smell the infamous odor. To walk under a durian tree when its fruit
are falling is to risk death since the spiked fruit may fall from over
100 feet up in the tree. Duri is Malay for thorn."

Along with each recipe please share some background information so the reader will gain better
understanding of the food item and its place in your experience. Please explain any uncommon
ingredients and suggest how to obtain them. Be sure to give us your name, country and years
of service. Also classify each dish as to type, e.g. appetizer, beverage, dessert, soup,
main dish, main starch, vegetable, or side dish. Be clear about amounts, times and temperatures.
If an ingredient is very difficult to obtain can you advise about a substitute or the impact
of omitting it?
